Who Needs Rehab?

Drinking alcohol alone does not signify a need for alcohol rehab. However, alcoholism affects millions of people around the globe, and it’s estimated that nearly 80% of those who drink heavily eventually develop some form of substance dependence. The consequences of excessive alcohol consumption include poor health (heart, liver and blood conditions), social issues (job loss, lack of concentration, poor sleep regimes leading to inconsistencies in schedules) and relationship problems (lack of trust, holding secrets, hiding alcohol use, uncontrolled intercourse).

For those suffering from alcohol addiction, rehab can provide the tools necessary to overcome dependency. Learn more about the treatments offered at rehab centres to determine whether they suit your situation.

Recognising the Signs of Alcohol Addiction

Alcohol rehab is necessary for people who display symptoms of alcohol dependence and alcohol addiction, who have been diagnosed with an alcohol use disorder or who are abusing substances such as drugs or prescribed medications while drinking alcohol. Symptoms of alcohol addiction include:

  • Excessive alcohol consumption
  • Secretive behaviours when the topic of drinking is introduced
  • Constantly carrying alcoholic drinks to events and gatherings
  • Experiencing withdrawal symptoms when not drinking
  • Being unable to have fun, manage stress or ‘be calm’ without alcohol

An alcohol rehab, such as ours, can help you learn about your (or your loved one’s) alcohol withdrawal symptoms, how to manage them and why drinking alcohol to subdue them harms your body more than it helps. Alcohol rehab treatment is not just about treating the addiction; it’s also about helping everyone involved recover through talking therapies. Discovering alternative coping mechanisms is key to alcohol rehab, which is why we focus our treatment on progressive learning and re-learning behaviours.

How Does Alcohol Addiction Harm Us?

You may be wondering why are your loved ones so keen on sending you to one of those alcohol rehab centres. The reason for this is that they are worried and are seeing the effects of your alcohol use disorder (or excessive drinking) on your everyday life, mental health, and maybe even physical health. Here are some of the issues related to how much we drink alcohol. However, remember that while it’s good to decide to stop drinking, it is dangerous to do it without supervision. Instead, consult with an alcohol rehab treatment provider and discuss the options before trying to sober up without medical advice and assistance.

Therapies Used in Alcohol Rehab

After alcohol abuse becomes chronic, it may be difficult to stop drinking on your own. If you cannot control alcohol use or if you are at risk of harming yourself or others, an alcohol addiction treatment program will help you overcome this problem. Most programs offer individual counselling, group activities, and 12-step support groups. These therapies also teach coping skills to avoid relapse after leaving treatment.

Traditional therapies

  • Cognitive behavioural therapy
  • Counselling
  • 1-to-1 Individual Therapy
  • Psychoanalysis
  • Dialectical behavioural therapy

Two types of therapies can make up your bespoke alcohol addiction treatment programme – traditional and holistic (modern). We Can Recover focuses on the person. We will assess your alcohol use, why you have been abusing the substance and how we can help you rebuild a sober alternative to your drinking habits.

Holistic therapies

  • Gong therapy
  • Yoga
  • Mindfulness
  • Sports
  • Music therapy

The Rehab Process

The typical length of stay for drug and alcohol rehab programs is between 28 and 30 days, 60 days or 90 days. While it is beneficial to receive treatment for any length of time, we recommend that individuals spend at least 90 days receiving treatment. At We Can Recover, we follow a tailored process which includes the following steps:

Assessment

Before checking in, you will pass an assessment. During this stage, our specialist medical expert will discuss your current condition, your medical history, the current medication you may be taking, and what has been prescribed during your detox process as follow-up alcohol addiction treatment. If you have gone through a detox programme elsewhere, we may want to contact them for historical information on your alcohol detox experience.

Checking In

You will have to answer a few check-in questions such as how long you have been using, when do you usually turn to alcohol, have you abused other substances while drinking, whether you have experienced any medical emergencies because of alcohol and more.

Individual Therapy

Your therapy schedule will be different to the ones of other residents at our centre. As part of your individual sessions, you will experience a mix of talking therapies, holistic therapies and psychotherapy.

Group Therapy

Group therapies are mainly talking therapies which involve sharing and helping others with their own difficulties. Alcohol treatment also focuses on creating a new, sober community in which you will feel safe to experience the joys of life without worrying about spirits.

Family Therapy

You may have neglected your family while being addicted to alcohol, or they may have stepped away from you, afraid of how your dependence may affect their own lives. Either way, our focused sessions will help you and your loved ones reinstate the sense of trust and respect necessary for long-lasting family life,

Aftercare Planning

Near the end of your stay with us, we will discuss future steps in your recovery. Because relapse rates are heightened once one leaves residential alcohol rehab, we take extra care for you during your first year after you complete your alcohol rehab with us. We will plan counselling sessions, – we provide weekly aftercare remotely which can accessed for at least a year after leaving treatment.

Frequently Asked Questions

You may have a lot of questions about the alcohol rehab programme. Our admissions team are ready to answer any questions the answers to which you cannot find on our website.

When to seek alcohol treatment?

Alcoholism is a disease that affects many people every day across the globe. But how do you know if someone you care about needs help? Here are some common signs that they might be suffering from alcoholism.

  1. They drink alone
  2. They become aggressive when denied access to alcohol
  3. Their work suffers because of it
  4. They often don’t remember what happened the night before
  5. They’re secretive about their drinking habits
  6. They lie to cover up their drinking

What are the stages of treating alcoholism?

Alcoholism treatment typically begins with detoxification, followed by outpatient rehabilitation or residential alcohol rehab. Afterwards, patients are often encouraged to attend 12-step meetings, such as Alcoholics Anonymous, while continuing in therapy.

Hence, the stages are as follows:

  • Assessment of alcohol use
  • Detoxification
  • Rehabilitation for alcoholism/alcohol use disorder and dependence
  • Aftercare and ongoing recovery

Will my insurance cover rehab?

In the United Kingdom, unlike in countries such as the United States, no legislation states that addiction treatment is covered by the national health insurers, the government or the NHS. However, many private health insurance policies include some form of coverage for substance abuse treatment and rehab centres. If you have a policy with your current insurer, it’s essential to find out whether it covers substance abuse treatment.

Many plans will not cover any costs associated with alcohol or drug use unless there is a diagnosis from a physician. If you are struggling with an addiction problem but haven’t been diagnosed yet, your insurance may not cover rehab. It’s best to check with your provider before entering rehab so your insurance can be arranged properly. Please contact our team to so we can help you find out.

What if I don't feel well enough after the programme and need to stay longer?

We can discuss external alcohol rehabilitation if you and your therapists consider you not ready to leave the residential facility. Keep in mind, however, that leaving residential rehab is always stressful and causes minor anxiety in almost everyone who has completed their programme.

This is why we organise aftercare sessions for everyone who goes through our alcohol rehab programmes. During the years after your residential treatment, you will experience triggering situations, cravings and even anxiety. This is why we encourage you to participate in fellowship meetings in your area, as well as set up a therapy plan with our aftercare experts.
